Biomarker Series: Apolipoprotein B – The New Kid On The Block

For a long time, cholesterol has been the main indicator for cardiovascular health. But times change. As medicine and technology become more and more advanced, scientists are finding better ways to predict heart disease. A relatively new marker has dethroned low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or otherwise known as ‘the bad cholesterol’) as the best indicator and its name is Apolipoprotein B (or ApoB for short).

Last week our Medical Director Doctor Murdoc Khaleghi talked about the lipid panel in WellnessFX Baseline. Today he shows us another angle WellnessFX Baseline utilizes to give the best overall picture of your health.

ApoB is actually a particle on LDL cholesterol. If we consider LDL to be the pirate ships that sail into the blood vessels to send everything awry, then ApoB particles are their anchors. It’s the protein which connects to the edge of LDL, hangs on to the blood vessel, and allows cholesterol to build up and block blood flow.

If ApoB is such a good indicator, why haven’t I heard of it? you may be asking. Well, healthcare can be slow to catch up to medical advances, and insurance doesn’t always cover the newer tests unless there’s ‘good enough reason.’ For example, ApoB tests aren’t usually ordered unless a patient has family history of heart disease or already has high triglyceride levels. But when it comes to your health, are you willing to settle for good enough?

With WellnessFX Baseline, you don’t have to wait until something goes wrong to get the best idea of your overall health.
